The seventies were a maturing experience,
both for myself and the local music scene, as well as rock music in
general. It brought to fruition, that which had been born in the fifties
and the beginning
of the end to what many felt was that good ol' time rock and roll as
the pop music of the masses.
While there was some really good music (especially in the first
half of the decade), the seventies also gave us a return to dance
music in the form of disco (I especially remember the bumper stickers, "Disco
Sucks"). With the demise of the municipal "teen centers" (and
our own teen status), many of my contemporaries (as well as myself)
ended up in lounges, trying to figure out what to do next.
You can sort of track the evolution of the local music scene (at
least that part that I had a connection with) in the chronology of
the bands listed here. I was not happy with what I perceived as the
path of rock music in the mid 70s and started turning my attention
more and more toward country music. By the end of the decade, I had
realized my lifelong dream as a guitar player (i.e., to record and
play on the road with a hit recording act) and was fully immersed
in the music of my roots.
