Carl's Scrapbook: My 80's Bands: Southern Honey #7 (1983)
Greg had been hanging out with the band off and on for several weeks and had indicated a desire to try and strengthen some of the weak areas in the sound. I knew he was a fine R&B player and I also knew he had some country experience -- so in mid-February we started rehearsing (usually at the Coachlight) what would turn out to be the final episode of Southern Honey. Actually, from a musical standpoint, this was one of, if not the strongest version of the band. From a longevity standpoint, this version would be the winner hands down - lasting almost a full year. Booking wise, it would be a roller-coaster ride of some really good, prestigious jobs and some really low-down bottom of the barrel gigs. As it has been said, "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times".
Mar 7-12 - Coachlight Lounge, Auburndale April 9 - FOP Concert - Ft. Lauderdale,
FL with Earl Thomas Conley and Leon
Everette. Audience reaction to "Close Enough To Perfect" overwhelmed
me so much, I forgot the words. (awesome) May 2 - Hyatt-Regency Hotel, Tampa June 7 - FanFair, Nashville, TN (NSAI
show) A real thrill and a once in a
lifetime opportunity (at least so far) July 3 - Auburndale Speedway - Don't
remember why, but the gig was under the bleachers [see SLIDESHOW
at right] Aug 1-6 - Dundee Holiday Inn Sep 2-4 - Sally's Shrimp Boat, Winter
Haven - a neat place, and one of the
locations where the movie "China Moon" would be shot Oct 7 - Country Junction, Tampa - only gig we ever got stiffed for - the place
was a dump and the owner refused to pay us - did not not like original
songs - a real jerk Nov 9-12 - All-America Fair, Lakeland - What if they had a fair and nobody
came? Dec 9-10 - Lake Placid Holiday Inn - Official Final Performances of Southern Honey This site was created and is maintained by Carl Chambers for Dizzy Rambler Productions
