I'm not sure exactly what year we wrote this song -- probably 1982 or '83. The original idea came from a scene that a friend of mine had painted into one of his songs, that always just kinda stuck in my mind. His song had something to do with Cinderella and that's about all I remember of it -- but it did inspire me to pen most of these lyrics. The song was written around the hook -- which was just a cutesy play on words I came up with one day.
I had struggled with the song for some time but was just unable to resolve the chorus. When I played the unfinished song for Herb McCullough, he expressed a desire to help me finish it and within a day or two he had put the finishing touches on the chorus, including the lines that made the whole thing come together-- "But too many long nights, at home all alone nights, drove her right over the line". All in all, "He finally Made Up Her Mind" is also one of my favorite lyrics.
As
it turns out, "He Finally Made Up Her Mind" was the only song
in my catalog that the Welk song pitchers ever got cut. It may have been
the only one they ever pitched. In 1986, the song was released on the
John Schneider album, "A Memory Like You". I always felt the
production sounded a little unfinished, but John sang it well and I was
always happy to say I had a song cut by "Bo" Duke (sorry John).
