Our own Bobby Braddock's funny, lyrical, and moving recollection of his youth. DOWN IN ORBURNDALE is about growing up in Central Florida before Disney World, when the region was more rural and the culture was more Southern.

April 1955 - (57 years ago)- WGTO-AM signed on-the-air for the first time from studios then located in Haines City. The station was licensed for operation with 10,000 watts of power at 540 kilohertz - from local sunrise to local sunset.

April 3, 1976 (36 years ago) - After being closed for 5 months in order to undergo a $3 million expansion - Mattel re-opens an expanded Circus World theme-park with several new shows under the "Big Top".

April 4, 1987 (25 years ago) - Boardwalk and Baseball theme-park officially opens at the former Circus World location.

April 13, 1945 - Oft-time manager of the Sammy Killegrew Dance Band (aka The Starfires), Sam Killebrew, was born.

April 23, 1982 (30 years ago) - Duke Burr plays his last job with Southern Honey (at the Hartridge Restaurant) having taken the job of lead guitarist with Reba McIntire's band.

April 26, 1973 (38 years ago) - Ground breaking ceremonies for the Circus World "Advance Showcase" were held on the southeast corner of the junction of US 27 and Interstate 4, north of Haines City, FL.
